The New York Times Fulsome means ‘disgusting because overdone, excessive, overboard, nauseating flattery’, but President Obama used it incorrectly in a recent speech, prompting William Safire to write about it in his column On Language in the New York Times, & also prompting the NYT to commission this typographic drawing from me. Oh alright, twist my arm.
So long, darling I made these three drawings into limited edition letterpress prints, printed by the wonderful Shona Gow at Magpie Press in Auckland, with generous support from the mysterious False Dog. Printed in dark blue on 425gsm Somerset in an edition of 50, signed and numbered. Buy them here, or email me to buy direct.
The naughty chairs Marilyn Sainty is a much-admired fashion designer & the driving force behind Scotties Boutique. In a mythical ideal world I would shop only there, nowhere else. Marilyn recently approached me to design the back sections for a series of customised bentwood chairs. These are still in production, keep your eyes peeled for developments…
Sentimental Journey This is a collaboration between three friends: Me, the typeface designer Kris Sowersby, and the poet Kate Camp. Kris and I had been talking about working together for a while, finding a way to combine our respective skills in handlettering and typeface design. We decided on this, a variation on the Exquisite Corpse game invented by the Surrealists. We quickly realised it would be more successful if we worked in ignorance of each other, so we roped in my best friend, Kate. Kate chose a series of two-word phrases, and splitting them, she shipped half to Kris and half to me. Kris and I worked in secret, only revealing the results on completion. No changes have been made to them since.
Sentimental Journey has since gone on to win several awards, among them the Gold in the Graphic Arts section of the NZ Designers Institute Best Awards 2011, the overall Best in Discipline at the same awards and a Certificate of Excellence from the International Society of Typographic Designers 2011 in London. We are very pleased with ourselves.
